Cambridge Rock Festival
Earlier this year I did a photo shoot with the lovely Tia Colcomb, (who’s EP, Giant Balloon, you can buy here,) and Tia told me at the time she would be performing at the Cambridge Rock Festival and could get me tickets if I wanted to go, provided I could take some photos of her performing.
Never one to turn down an invite to a fun event, particularly if I get to take photos and especially if it’s free, I gladly took Tia up on her offer.
I was unable to attend the Thursday evening due to work obligations, but was determined to get there on Friday to see Tia perform. The first challenge was getting there. I currently don’t own a car, so after a bus journey where I overshot my stop and then another bus journey back to it, where I had to get out on a roundabout, followed by about a mile’s walk over a road bridge with no path, I finally arrived, a bit late to the party.
I got through the ticket tent after they found me on the guest list an I scrambled to the acoustic tent. Luckily Tia hadn’t started, as there’d been a delay due to equipment. We got chance to catch up briefly before she took to the stage with her guitarist and launched into her set, comprising of original songs and some imaginative cover versions.
After that the evening was my own to do with as I pleased, so I wandered around, bought some beer tokens and had a beer while watching various bands and taking photos.
It was while eating some delicious Chinese food from one of the vans that I thought I heard my name being yelled. I ignored it as the only person I knew there was Tia, but it turned out to be a colleague from a now-defunct music review site we both used to write for. Now considering we’d never met in person, he did well to recognise me! We caught up and spent the rest of the evening hanging out, watching bands, having a beer or two and chatting, while I snapped shots.
All in all a great evening. I had hoped to return for the weekend as well, but work and travel made it impossible to do so. Hopefully next year I’ll be able to see more of it.
Were you there? Leave me a comment and let me know the other nights were!
